In this DIY I replace rear shocks and mounts on a 2013 Mazda3 G Skyactiv.
Procedure should be very similar to other years.
Basic 12mm, 13mm, 17mm wrenches/sockets vice grip or vice are all that is needed (not accounting for jacking up the car, safety stands, 21mm lugnuts, etc).
I got KYB Excel G gas shocks. They seemed to be a bit sportier oriented than Monroe and I did not find good reviews on others.
Shocks and mounts are symmetric left to right in the rear.
For the shocks, part number is KYB 343413 (you need 2x of these).
For the mounts, part number is KYB SM5619 (you need 2x of these).
The shocks come with a top nut that secures them to the mounts, and the mounts come with new lock nuts that secure them to the chassis.
Torque on the top mount nut that secures the shock shaft to the mount is hand tight till it bottoms out.
Torque on the 2 nuts that secure the mount to the chassis is 20 lbs-ft.
Torque on the large bolt that secures the bottom of the shock to the control arm is 70 lbs-ft.
