“We are having this crazy debate over did he shoot it down fast enough and what is the timeline, which is really nuts if you think about it, because essentially he did the right thing, and that has nothing to do with the bigger issue at play, which is Secretary Blinken’s trip to China and what he was supposed to be doing there. We’ve totally lost the thread on this thing.”
“What about the U.S.-China relationship that we were supposed to be fixing on this trip? I think that’s actually a much more important and much bigger story.”
“The takeaway for both the U.S. and China should be that we have to get the relationship to a place where a little thing like this – and in the grand scheme of things this is a little thing – doesn’t blow up the whole relationship. And the onus to most of that work is actually on the Chinese side, because the Chinese government is the one that’s being aggressive militarily, expanding in the South China Sea, committing a genocide, menacing Taiwan, cracking down on Hong Kong, etc.”
“We have big structural problems in the U.S.-China relationship, and none of them have to do with the balloon. And it’s not just us, it’s the whole region.”
“We have to do more to show the Chinese we care about the U.S.-China relationship – and not only when the balloon falls.”
