2013 Alumni Merit Award - Atmospheric, Oceanic and Space Sciences
Dr. C. Bruce Baker has become one of the country's leading experts in climate observation and data analysis. He has built an outstanding career at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Holding a variety of positions within that organization, he has focused on studying the physics of the atmosphere. For example, from 2000-2009 he was Chief Scientist for NOAA's National Climatic Data Center. There, he was involved in developing and deploying the United States Climate Reference Network, which monitors climate change in the U.S and Alaska.
In 2009, Dr. Baker was named Director of NOAA's Atmospheric Turbulence and Diffusion Lab. In this position, he provides leadership in performing air quality and climate-related research related to issues of national and global importance.
In addition to his primary responsibilities at NOAA, Dr. Baker also served as Chair of the American Meteorological Society's Atmospheric Measurements Committee for 12 years. He has participated on advisory panels for the National Science Foundation and the National Academy of Science. Currently, he is Vice President of the World Meteorological Organization Committee on Instruments and Methods of Observations.
