It is one of his most enduring works, and is frequently taught in university courses on music. The mass is often used as a model for the study of "stile antico" of Renaissance polyphony.
According to legend, it was the clear, intelligible style of the "Missa Papae Marcelli" which persuaded the Council of Trent not to ban polyphonic music from church services. The "Kyrie" middle movements demonstrate that Palestrina was quite conscious of the need for intelligible text.
