The first astronomical day of winter, also known as the winter solstice, has less daylight than any other day of the year. On December 21, 2022 at 4:47 p.m. ET, the North Pole will reach its maximum tilt away from the sun and for 24 hours all locations north of the Arctic Circle will be shrouded in darkness.
