Liverpool City Region Combined Authority has directly purchased an initial fleet of 20 hydrogen buses from Alexander Dennis. As part of its ongoing plans to reshape transport in the region, the new buses are being bought directly by the Combined Authority, alongside a fleet of new trains for the Merseyrail network.
Designed especially with input from local people and stakeholders, the buses will feature 'larger and more comfortable seats' with bespoke designs as well as promising increased capacity for wheelchair users and passengers with prams or buggies. The vehicles will also have features including wireless and USB phone charging, WiFi and reading lights at all seats. They will also be fitted with a camera mirror system to improve safety, as well as audio and visual next stop announcements, accompanied by high definition screens to update passengers on journey progress, upcoming stops and onward travel connections in real time.
The new buses will serve the city's busy route 10A, which is jointly operated by Arriva and Stagecoach and runs between St Helens, Knowsley and Liverpool city centre. It will be the region's first 'green bus route' which will introduce priority lanes, traffic signal upgrades and remodelled junctions to prioritise buses over other road traffic.
The first vehicles will begin to arrive in the city in early 2023 and are scheduled to enter service from late spring.
