In this video, I cover how to install, play and mod Skyrim Special Edition on Windows 11 using Mod Organiser 2.
Step 1. Install The Game.
To my knowledge, there are two legal ways to obtain this game, either through Steam or as part of Microsoft Xbox Game Pass.
Once the game is installed, launch at least once and set your graphical settings, as this is very important as it will creates the INI files that we about to tweak.
Step 2. Install and Run BethINI.

This is a standalone utility that allows you to automatically tweaks the game’s INI files to improve performance and reduce crashes.
There are two versions you can download but I recommend the standalone version.
Once launched, the interface is very modular, and you can make it as simple or complicated as you want it to be, personally I only make changes in the Basic tab.
Specifically, I choose the High preset and Recommended Tweaks options.
Either way, once you are happy with the changes, click the Save and Exit button.
Step 3. Install SKSE (Skyrim Script Extender).

This is a script extender is required for some more advanced mods.
The general idea is to download the latest release from the website and extract it to the game’s installation folder.
For example, since I have the Anniversary edition, I will copying the entire extracted folder to:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Skyrim Special Edition
Make sure to overwrite any files if you get a prompt, and SKSE will now be installed.
Step 4. Install a Mod manager

My recommendation is Mod Organizer 2 mainly because it integrates well with both BethINI and SKSE.
Once Mod Organizer 2 is installed, launch it and you will be asked to choose which game you want to manage, in this case it is Skyrim Special Edition.
To install a mod, click on the computer and disk icon and select the mod you have previously downloaded.
First, you will be prompted to give the mod a name and then click OK to install, once the mod is installed, click the tick to activate it.
Repeat the process for any other mods you wish to use.
After you have installed several mods, you need to arrange a suitable load order.
Mod Organiser includes a utility called LOOT which will do this for you if you click on the Sort button and confirm.
Once you have finished modding the game, click the Run button and make sure that SKSE is chosen as the option, as going forward this will be the way to launch the game.
Step 5. Recommended Mods.
All these mods will enhance the gameplay or fix outstanding bugs in the PC version of the game but are lore friendly and do not give the player character any significant advantage.
