Abstract:
Porous media with embedded tubular network systems occur in several biological and technical applications, such as perfusion of vascularised bio-tissue, root water and nutrient uptake, injection and extraction wells in hydrogeological reservoirs, or heat exchangers.
Accurate models for heat and mass transfer between network and embedding porous media are important to capture the relevant transport properties of such systems. The fact that the tubular networks are thin is both a challenge and an opportunity for designing efficient numerical schemes.
We present some theory and examples of mixed-dimension schemes, for which flow and transport is formulated in terms of one-dimensional PDEs on the network centrelines coupled to three-dimensional PDEs the embedding porous medium domain.
Furthermore, we introduce a code framework for multi-domain simulations using the open-source porous media simulator DuMux ([ Ссылка ]) and apply it to simulate tracer transport in micro vessels in the brain and root water uptake.
