How to determine goldfish sex.
The best time determine goldfish sex is after they have reached breeding maturity. It is hard to tell juvenile fish sex.
Females: Females usually have a larger belly. If you look closely after goldfish have reached maturity you can see an egg bump by their tail and under belly. Often time males are mistaken for females because they have large bellies and bodies.
Males: Males tend to have bigger fins and tails but it’s not a determining factor. Once they have reached maturity you need to observe they’re gills and fins. If you look closely you can see little white dots on gills and fins. Theses are called tubercles. This will confirm you goldfish are males but they are sometime difficult to see.
If you’re having a hard time determine the sex, you can watch for spawning activity. This is what I believe is the best way to tell if your fish are male or females. If you put your goldfish to spawn it is easy to tell. The males will chase around the female and this confirms the sex.
