The CMS detector is one of the large-scale experiments at the LHC particle accelerator at the CERN research center in Geneva, Switzerland. Over the next few years, about 1,000 silicon strip modules will be produced in Aachen for the CMS phase II upgrade – a complex and elaborate process that is an "international collaboration, with groups from all over the world working together," as Professor Oliver Pooth from the Chair of Experimental Physics III B explains. "This gives our students the opportunity to learn about the broad field of elementary particles." 😀

Research Activities of the Department of Physics
Research in the Physics Department of RWTH Aachen is focussed on condensed matter physics and particle physics. The first area ranges from application in information technology over method development to fundamental studies of quantum systems and includes solid state physics, nano science, quantum information and statistical physics. The second field studies fundamental questions regarding the nature of matter, its elementary constituents and their interaction. Groups in the Physics Department are involved in several international large scale projects and maintain numearouns collaborations with other groups at RWTH, in Germany, and worldwide.
