How The Brand Coca Cola Started Ft. John Pemberton | What A Brand

After sustaining a life - threatening injury while serving as a colonel in the army Dr. John Pemberton became addicted to morphine.

After years of struggle, he decided to move past his addiction and improve his life. He embarked on a quest to find a substitute for the drug.

Pemberton being a chemist thought of experimenting with a few ingredients. He made mixture of kola nuts and coca leaves, and after adding a few more ingredients converted it into a syrup and added carbonated water.

He could not register his original version of the drink as it contained alcohol and local laws prevented him from selling it. So he tweaked the original formula and made a similar non - alcoholic version of it.

In 1886, Pemberton started selling his drink to the neighborhood pharmacy and marketed it as a cure for many problems - like morphine addiction, indigestion, headaches, etc. It was an instant hit among the people.

Pemberton thought of expanding his business and started searching for a good name for his brand. His partner and bookkeeper, Frank Robinson suggested “ Coca Cola”

Coca derived from Coca leaves and Cola derived from Kola nuts. He thought the words Coca and Cola would look nice together, which is why he dropped the K in Kola nuts and replaced it with a C

Coca Cola was responsible for the invention of cola as a category we know today.
Due to its innovative product launches, smart acquisitions and great marketing initiatives over the years it emerged as the largest beverage company in the world.

This is how the cure for one man’s morphine addiction led to the beginning of a world class company.
