Serology testing is a way that we look to make sure that individuals are mounting an immune response. What you see when we're looking for an immune response are immunoglobulins rising. When someone gets infected, say with #coronavirus they have an infection called, #COVID-19. With #serology, we measure what those levels of antibodies are in your body.
Once you know who's mounting an immune response, you can figure out; number one, are they healthy enough to mount the immune response, but number two, from a societal perspective you can look to see how well they're going to respond during the pandemic. The notion of having serology in place, is important because we can distinguish who's been exposed, had an infection and recovered, and who has not. This is really important. We look at this for first responders, for people on manufacturing lines, as we can move to have a healthy workforce. In addition, as we prepare for a vaccine, we want to know who's already immune to COVID-19. Once we have that information, based on serology, we can better distribute that vaccine.
In this video, Beckman Coulter's Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Shami Feinglass, discusses immunity as it pertains to COVID-19.
