The Scott Monument is a memorial built in Edinburgh, Scotland, in honor of the Scottish writer Sir Walter Scott. Completed in 1844, this 61-meter-high structure is a stunning example of Gothic architecture. Located in Princes Street Gardens, visitors can climb its 287 steps to enjoy breathtaking views of Edinburgh.
Edinburgh is Scotland's capital and has a history stretching back thousands of years. Notably, the Old Town together with the New Town of Edinburgh forms a UNESCO World Heritage Site. One end is closed by Edinburgh Castle and the Royal Mile leads away from it, with minor streets (called closes or wynds) budding off the main spine.
The topography for the city is known as "crag and tail" and was created during the Ice Age. The hilltop crag was the earliest part of the city to develop, becoming fortified by King Malcolm III and his wife, Saint Margaret of Scotland in the 11th century and eventually developing into the current Edinburgh Castle.
The rest of the city grew slowly down the tail of land from the Castle Rock to the Palace of Holyrood. This growth continued with the development of the New Town during a time of social reform and prosperity after the Jacobite rebellions of the 18th century. Today Edinburgh is one of the most visited places in Scotland.
