US President Bill Clinton, in Hawaii for the 50th anniversary of
the end of World War II, welcomed the announcement on Friday (1/9)
that the warring parties in the former Yugoslavia will meet next
week in Geneva to set principles for peace talks. "This is a
positive step forward", he said. Administration officials credit
NATO's air bombing campaign, which started on Wednesday (30/8) and
ended on Friday, with breaking the diplomatic logjam. But Bill
Clinton warned the Bosnian Serbs that there may be more to come.
"No one should question the resolve of NATO to stop the innocent
slaughter of civilians in Sarajevo and other safe areas in
Bosnia," the president declared.
