Surtain, a new herbicide option 10 years in the making, is expected to receive EPA registration approval by the end of 2023. If so, corn producers will have a new option for controlling weeds in 2024, including eight weeks of broad-spectrum residual control of 79 grass and broadleaf weeds, including stubborn palmer amaranth and waterhemp.
The solid encapsulation technology, explains BASF Technical Marketing Manager Dan Waldstein, is unique in allowing post emergence application of Kixor while avoiding crop damage.
“We were looking for an opportunity to spray a PPO-herbicide that had burn-down qualities and was excellent at weed control. But as soon as the corn emerged, we could not apply because it injured the corn,” Waldstein explained. “So, we wanted to basically have an encapsulation process to protect the corn plant, but still maintain that weed control.”
