COURSE SUMMARY: The Quaternary Ammonium Compounds, SiQAC, have been coupled with trialkoxysilanes with methacryloxy or epoxy functionalities via sol-gel platform chemistry that utilises tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) or dimethyldiethoxysilane as the anchoring unit, generating a host of quaternary ammonium silanes (QAS) molecules with antimicrobial activities. Antimicrobial and reparative efficacy of K21 disinfectant is a proof of concept for enhanced killing of bacteria across root dentin acquiring functional type M2 polarization for ethnopharmacological effects. The drug formulation can have great potential for targeting even cancerous cells. K21 can also inhibit the catalytic action of MMPs and SrtA enzymes preventing dentinal and periodontal disease initiation.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Describe K21's specific pocket binding on various MMPs and its production of a classical clouting effect
Demonstrate the expression of M2 polarized subsets and how they show K21 in resolving inflammation and potentiate tissue repair
Discuss how the K21 based drug delivery system leads to reduced migration and adhesion of oral squamous cell carcinoma cells
Describe how in a complex root canal system, the potential to exploit K21 for a feasible therapeutic approach against biofilm infection offering a sufficiently large therapeutic window
