Obidos is a medieval hilltop town, surrounded by castle walls, 50 miles north of Lisbon, Portugal.
There’s no train, but it’s an easy day trip from Lisbon if you rent a car. It truly surpassed my expectations, and next time I'll stay overnight in Obidos.

Obidos Castle can be seen from miles away. It was originally built in the 8th Century, and then added on to and changed over the years.
Modern-day Obidos Castle is a tourist attraction, museum, and hotel.
You can walk on the ancient stone walls that extend out from the castle, and surround the town.
Down below, you’ll enjoy walking the old stone streets, which wind through the village, that’s filled with colorful homes and businesses.
Ginja is a traditional Portuguese liqueur which originated in Obidos. They sell it all over the place, and it makes for a great gift from your visit to this historic town.
Consider combining a day trip from Lisbon to Obidos with another stop farther north in Nazare, the coastal town with some of the biggest and most famous surfing waves in the world.
