Yosakoi Background:
Started in 1954, the Yosakoi festival is one of the 10 largest festivals in Japan, which is really saying something. It’s a parade style festival with over 200 teams from all over Japan with up to 150 members of literally all ages. It’s held every August for 4 days including opening night and a day for the best teams to dance once more on a stage downtown. During the two middle days teams will travel all over the city performing on streets which are closed down for the day and the main shopping arcade downtown. They get individual awards from judges and teams as a whole get points determining the top teams who can dance on the final day.
The teams dress in a huge variety of costumes, hair and make up, following large trucks loaded with speakers which are decorated to match their teams’ themes. They blast music that has common phrases between each team, but is customized in a range of styles from traditional Japanese to modern pop, hip hop and rock. The trucks will often even carry people playing live instruments inside and singers on top.
On a personal note, the thing that impresses me most about Yosakoi is just the overall energy and atmosphere. Young and old, the teams put 150% effort into their performances throughout the entire long and terribly hot days, and that is simply amazing. It doesn’t end there though- the fans watching have such a strong sense of community and selflessness; fanning the dancers rather than themselves and quickly making space for people who come by to support their friends and family as the teams pass. With thousands and thousands of people filling the city and many of them drunk by early in the day, everything is just so positive. When they finish up, everyone -including team members- stick around to pick up trash and you wouldn’t even guess such a huge festival had just finished 10 minutes before.
It’s something that I think everyone should see at least once if they have the chance, and I’m proud to live in the city that hosts it.
