When the announcement was made that the Rolling Stones’ upcoming tour wasn’t going to include Charlie, fans were understandably concerned. The longtime drummer had famously made it through two separate periods of drug addiction, as well as a battle with throat cancer, without ever having to cancel a tour.
Fans were scared that Charlie’s health might be failing, though it was hard to grasp exactly what the reason had been for him deciding not to go on the tour. There were rumors that he had undergone heart surgery, though these rumors were unsubstantiated. The announcement did say that Charlie had undergone a successful operation of some kind, though what kind of operation wasn’t specified.
The last anyone had heard, Charlie was withdrawing from the upcoming tour so that he could recover from his successful operation. The announcement was made on August 4, 2021, and Charlie was dead several weeks later. Possibly, whatever operation Charlie had undergone wasn’t as successful as it had seemed. Otherwise, perhaps the aging drummer had succumbed to some other kind of issue that proved his inevitable undoing.
Charlie is survived by his wife and daughter. Charlie was married only once during his lifetime and was still married to his first wife upon the time of his death. His wife’s name was Shirley, and they had a daughter named Serafina. The Rolling Stones are set to go forward with their upcoming tour, with Mick Jagger and Keith Richards as the only remaining members from the band’s classic line-up.
