As of 31 December 2023, there are approximately 853 stateless persons living in Singapore, according to Minister for Home Affairs and Law, K Shanmugam.
In a parliamentary reply, Minister Shanmugam highlighted that these individuals, including seven children under 12, have varied circumstances, with some born in Singapore to foreign parents who did not secure citizenship for their child.
Minister Shanmugam underscored that it is the responsibility of parents to secure citizenship for their children, but assured that stateless youth without guardianship receive statutory protection.
He also noted that stateless individuals who are Permanent Residents receive similar access to healthcare, education, and housing as other residents, though non-PRs face more limitations.
