Let's start with Riyadh Air, one of the new ambitious airlines of the Middle East, which is reaching to launch commercial flights. Recently, the airline announced that they have officially been licensed for testing flights from Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia. These flights were started on September, 12 with the first flight RXI 5001 from Riyadh to Jeddah, marking an important step in obtaining the Air Operator Certificate from the General Civil Aviation Authority. This is a mandatory requirement for Riyadh Air to operate as an official airline.
In the next months, this airline will continue operating more flights to demonstrate its ability before starting commercial flights in 20 25, following the plan. In the testing process, the airline not only focuses on domestic flights but also international flights. To serve this goal, they hired a Boeing 787 Dash 9 of Saudi. When officially debuts, it will be a whole-Boeing fleet airline, with the flagship being a 877 Dreamliner for long-haul routes.
This is clearly great news for Boeing when they will be ready for a new potential and loyal customer.
So, who is Riyadh Air?
This is an ambitious airline that was introduced on March 2023, as part of Saudi Arabia's economic development plan. The airline aims not only to attract transit passengers but also to make Saudi Arabia an appealing destination. Under the leadership of Tony Douglas, former CEO of Etihad Airways, along with an experienced executive team, Riyadh Air is focused on growing strongly in the international market. Although it focuses on premium services with wide-body aircraft, the airline does not intend to compete directly with major regional carriers like Qatar Airways, Emirates, or Etihad Airways. Instead, the airline targets potential niche markets.
