The scandalous play by Gabriele D'Annunzio's was the perfect template for Riccardo Zandonai's opera adaption FRANCESCA DA RIMINI, for lurid colour changes and a musical language that amalgamates the most diverse styles and times: From bel canto and Renaissance reminiscences to the harshness of verismo. Director Christof Loy draws a psychogram of a self-confident, non-conformist woman who escapes moral and social constraints.
