A total of 22,000 Japanese civilians gathered around Japan's National Diet building in central Tokyo Saturday afternoon to voice their opposition to Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and his administration's push to relocate the US Futenma Base to Okinawa's Henoko region.
The protestors demanded the Japanese government to quit the plan as they believed that the move of the military base from Futenma to Henoko is an extremely irresponsible behavior which can by no means alleviate the burden of the people in Okinawa.
What the Japanese civilians protested was not only the plan to relocate the US military base, but also a series of Abe's recent behaviors which are totally opposite to the pacifism he claimed.
"It is ridiculous to move Futenma Base to Henoko. What's more, Abe has done so many crazy things, and the Security Bill is one of them," said a protestor.
"Abe and his administration are undermining the peace that Japan has been protecting over the past 70 years. That's the reason why I oppose it. Instead of protecting the Japanese people, it would get Japan involved in wars and make Japan the target of terrorist organizations. It'll do us no good at all," said another protestor.
Kojima Sachiko, a 43-year-old mother, brought her three children with her to participate in the protest.
Strengthening military will threaten people all over the world. I'm sure that Abe intends to use the weapons in his hands. I just want to make him aware of the fact that there are so many people opposing him in order to protect their children's future," said Kojima Sachiko.
"I hate it to take part in wars with weapons, and end up to be shot dead," said a son of Kojima Sachiko.
