Variation of the 4-4-2
The 4-4-2 diamond is a variation of the traditional 4-4-2. The subtle change involves a diamond midfield.
Which now has a single pivot, two number 8s as box to box midfielders. And an attacking midfielder at the top of the diamond.
Numerical Superiority
With most teams using formations that have 3 players in midfield. The 4-4-2 diamond allows the team to create an overload in central areas.
The two number 8s will operate primarily in the half-spaces and can either move forward between the opposition lines. Or drop to provide support to the single pivot.
The attacking midfielder should generally try and remain positioned between opposition lines.
Using Two Strikers
Seen less frequently in the modern game, the two strikers are responsible for occupying the defending team’s centre-backs.
This will create space for other units and allow players to play between the lines.
The Full-backs
The 4-4-2 sacrifices wide players in the forward lines. This places a huge physical, technical and tactical demand on the full-backs. Due to being the only players in the team who can provide the team with natural width.
This does mean the formation can be exploited on transition if the full-backs are unable to recover quickly.
