I share my 20 years of experience in higher education. Being a data nerd, I collected my job market data from 2003. It is important to talk about failures to develop realistic expectations about the academic job market. I discuss the following issues (1) how to play the number game; (2) does it get better with experience; (3) have things changed over time; (4) do you need a Plan B; (5) should you be on the job market all the time.
