(13 Feb 2019) A national strike over pay and conditions in Belgium on Wednesday paralysed airports, sea ports and rail traffic and caused hundreds of factories to stop operating for the day.
The protests were sparked by three major trade unions who are demanding a boost to the minimum wage, better conditions and more education in the workplace.
The majority of flights across the country were cancelled after authorities deemed it unsafe for airports to operate with skeleton staff.
Prime Minister Charles Michel's centre-right government is not in a position to forcefully react to such demands since it was forced into a caretaker capacity late last year following the breakdown of the country's coalition government.
