Tiger Queen was my first documentary for NatGeo Wild with this tiger family. I followed this family for the next 10 years and made 3 more documentaries for National Geographic.
This fight has been shot with one single camera from a jeep using a zoom lens. Here, the safest bet would have been to keep a wide static shot and let the tigers fight. Doing this would minimize the risk of losing out on the action, but would not satisfy me as a filmmaker. To keep the pace going I took multiple shots as the tigress progressed towards her sister, sometimes giving her a frame entry, sometimes zooming on her actions to bring them out & sometimes panning. All until the last moment when she keeps her paw on the ground near her sister. If this would have gone wrong I would have lost a once in a lifetime opportunity. I strongly relied on my gut instincts and the risks paid off.
