Lionhead Studios sponsored this episode on Fable Legends. They had no editorial input over the content.
Fable Legends veers from the path not only of a traditional Fable game but of multiplayer games in general. It's an asymmetric multiplayer game, meaning the two sides in any online battle are effectively playing different games. In it, a team of four players play a co-op tactical action RPG against a single player who tries to foil them by placing enemy monsters and traps in a Dungeon Keeper like strategy game. The game must be approachable from both player perspectives and work on the simplified controls of the Xbox One console. The Fable Legends gamble may or may not pay off, but it raises interesting questions about what happens when designers change a recognizable brand so fundamentally and should produce interesting lessons about the viability of asymmetrical multiplayer at the AAA game development level.
