The upcoming 2024 BYD Seal U is set to electrify the compact SUV segment when it arrives in the US next year. As BYD's newest offering targeting the mainstream EV market, the Seal U brings a compelling mix of style, range, performance and tech.
Built on BYD’s advanced e-Platform 3.0 architecture, the Seal U strikes an athletic stance with smooth body lines, flush door handles and a sloping roofline. Signature LED lighting at both ends injects style, while available 18-20-inch alloy wheels add to the sporty aesthetic.
Inside, the 5-seater cabin marries high-tech interfaces with premium materials and generous passenger space. A massive 15.6-inch touchscreen headlines the minimalist dash, accompanied by a 12.8-inch digital gauge display. With over-the-air update capability, the Seal U’s infotainment system will stay fresh for years.
At the core of the Seal U’s performance are BYD’s new Blade batteries. Utilizing Lithium Iron Phosphate chemistry, Blade batteries promise excellent thermal stability and safety. The standard RWD model outputs a solid 335 hp, while the AWD dual-motor version doubles down with 500 hp. In initial testing, the mid-range AWD model sprinted to 60 mph in a brisk 4.5 seconds.
This instant acceleration comes courtesy of the silence of electric power. Apart from a faint whisper, the Seal U moves with barely a sound. Strong torque is delivered smoothly thanks to the single-speed transmission. Handling belies the 2.8-ton curb weight, with responsive steering and controlled body motions around turns.
Range estimates for the 86 kWh battery are pegged at 400 miles between charges. With support for up to 150 kW DC fast charging, the Seal U can add 150 miles in just 15 minutes of charging. For home charging, Level 2 240V hookup takes about 8 hours for a full charge.
BYD prioritizes safety and technology in the Seal U. The DiPilot driver assistance suite integrates adaptive cruise control, auto emergency braking, blind spot monitoring and other aids. BYD’s DM-i hybrid chip enables more powerful compute for advanced self-driving capabilities down the road.
Pricing for the BYD Seal U kicks off around $45,000 for the RWD variant, while the AWD model adds about $7,000. Exact pricing and trim levels will be announced closer to the on-sale date in early 2024.
Overall, the 2024 BYD Seal U checks all the right boxes for a compelling electric SUV. With leading range, rapid charging, and a high-tech cabin, the Seal U combines substance with style starting at a price nearly on par with a Honda CR-V. BYD appears posed to shake up the EV establishment when the Seal U lands in the US next year.
