Pochampally in Andhra Pradesh is the single largest tie and dye weaving centre in India, famous for its resist-dye designs called Ikkat. Despite its significant contribution to the national foreign exchange, Ikkat - a home-based industry still remains largely unorganised. The constant and repetitive nature of work and use of synthetic dyes over traditionally used natural materials, is leading to a decline in health conditions of the artisans. Innovative technological solutions are required to increase productivity and create a healthier environment for the thousands of artisans involved in the craft. Government, trade bodies, civil society and artisans can work together to weave a new story that narrates of a healthy and sustainable handloom industry.
