Why Do Owls Have Funny Ears? | Animal Facts for Kids | Owls Facts | Science Facts For Kids
Have you ever noticed the ears of an owl? They might look a bit funny compared to ours, but they are very special!
First, it's important to know that what we often think are owls' ears aren't actually their ears at all. Those tall feathers on top of an owl's head that look like ears are called "ear tufts". But they're not used for hearing - they're just feathers!
Owls' real ears are on the sides of their heads, hidden by feathers. You can't see them because they're covered up.
But here's the really funny part: an owl's ears are often uneven - one is higher on its head than the other. It might sound strange, but this helps the owl figure out where sounds are coming from. It's like a super-powered hearing system!
When a noise reaches the higher ear a tiny bit before it reaches the lower ear, the owl knows the sound is coming from below. If the noise reaches the lower ear first, the owl knows it's coming from above.
This amazing hearing helps owls hunt for food, even when it's very dark outside. So, even though owls' ears might seem funny to us, they're actually very clever and help owls be excellent hunters!
