++BEGINS AND ENDS ON SOUNDBITE++
1. SOUNDBITE (English) Chris Patten, last British governor of Hong Kong:
"As previous Chinese emperors and dictators have done, you can bury the scholars, but you can't bury their history. And in Hong Kong it's particularly an issue, because people in Hong Kong know from their own families why they're in Hong Kong, why their parents or grandparents stowed away, crawled over barbed wire, and swam, to get from Communist China, into a British colony, a safe haven, and that's of course a reason why China is morally embarrassed about the history of the colony."
STORYLINE:
The last British governor of Hong Kong on Monday said China's government is "morally embarrassed" about its history with Hong Kong.
Speaking to journalists as Hong Kong approaches 25 years since the end of British rule, Chris Patten said people in Hong Kong had struggled to "get from Communist China" into what he described as a "safe haven".
Patten has in the past been critical of the Chinese Communist Party's policies in Hong Kong.
