At a March 21 House Judiciary Committee hearing, Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) gave an emotional speech in response to the Protection of Women in Olympic and Amateur Sports Act. The bill seeks to prohibit people without biologically female anatomy from competing in Olympic and amateur sports intended for women.
Posting the clip to X, Jayapal wrote, ‘I asked Republicans to look at trans people for who they are — people. Just like all of us, all they want is to live happy and healthy lives. Stop attacking them. Let them live.’
Rep. Harriet Hageman (R-WY), one of the bill’s sponsors, has since publicly slammed Jayapal’s testimony, stating that she felt like ‘it was highly inappropriate’ and ‘largely staged.’
