Light combat aircraft LCA Tejas is a combination of latest concepts and technologies like relaxed static-stability, advanced glass cockpit, integrated digital avionics systems, fly-by-wire flight control and advanced composite materials for the airframe. The aircraft with 4.5 generation capabilities is equipped to with variety of air-to-air missiles, air-to-surface missiles, anti-ship missiles, bombs and rockets.
It is the lightest multi-role supersonic aircraft of its class. It can travel at a maximum speed of 2,205 km/hr for FOC version and 2,000 km/hr for IOC version. LCA tejas brings all these advance capabilities with an attractive price tag of Rs 280 crore per trainer aircraft and 309 crores for Tejas mk1A which is cheapest among all the trainer aircraft with 4.5th generation capabilities. All these attractive features bring the interested international customers like Australia, Argentina, Egypt & Malaysia looking for either trainer aircrafts or a light combat aircraft or both. As we have reported earlier, an attractive dual offer has been made to Malaysia for its FLIT-LCA requirement which includes MRO of SU-30 fleets along with LCA Tejas. Now, HAL and Indian Air Force has come up with lucrative offer for Egyptian Air Force.
Egyptian Air Force
The Egyptian Air force is currently operating 120 Chinese made Karakoram K-8E trainer aircraft. It has a requirement to replace most of the training aircraft that are now in operation.
As per The Economic Times, the Egyptian Air Force has a requirement of close to 70 light combat jets, with a focus on local production and technology transfer.
This opens a big opportunity for the trainer variant of Tejas or Tejas LIFT. Needless to mention Tejas is the best trainer platforms in the world. Looking at the requirement of Egypt, the order will be massive, and India must try to win this deal to big boost to its fighter jet production ecosystem.
India & Egypt engagement
In November Last year, the CAS Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari embarked five-day visit to Egypt to attend the Egypt Air Power Symposium and Egyptian Defence Exposition (EDEX) at the invitation of the Egyptian Air Force commander. HAL CMD also mentioned that the reason for the visit is to setup a manufacturing unit for LCA Tejas. HAL team also visited Cairo after the conclusion of the Dubai Air show 2021 to have talks with the Egyptian Air Force officials for the possible sale of LCA-Tejas aircraft to Cairo. At present, a 57-member Indian Air Force delegation is in Egypt to take part in a tactical leadership programme at the Air Force school in Cairo. The delegation includes three Su30 MKI and two C17 aircraft.
India’s offer to Egypt
A series of high-level engagement has already been taken between the two countries and Egyptian Air Force chief is expected to visit in few days during which India to showcase its manufacturing and MRO capability. India has offered to setup production facilities for the manufacturing of LCA as well as helicopters in Egypt as it pursues export opportunities in the Middle East and North Africa region.
HAL is at present have the capacity of delivering 16 Tejas per year and is working to increase it to 20 considering expected export orders. Tejas faces stiff competition from various other trainer platforms such as Leonardo M346 Master, Korean T-50 Golden Eagle and Russian Yak-130 to name a few.
