In anticipation of the upcoming 2021 Laureus World Sports Awards we’re taking a look back at some of the most iconic speeches from winners in the history of the event.
In 2020, Johann Rupert – Founding Patron of Laureus – handed the Team of the Year Award to Springboks captain Siya Kolisi.
Kolisi was the first black captain of the South African Rugby team, leading the Springboks to their third Rugby world cup. It was a massively symbolic win for South Africa which brought together all the communities in the country.
Kolisi, who grew up in the tough township of Zwide in South Africa, spoke poignantly about the power of sport to overcome the obstacles life throws at you:
“We have all faced adversity of some kind throughout our lives but have overcome challenges to stand here as winners, playing the game we all love.”
