The seven-day rate of new cases of Covid-19 in the UK has risen above 20 cases per 100,000 people. In the seven days to September 7 the rate stood at 21.3 cases per 100,000, up from 13.9 in the previous week (the seven days to August 31). New lockdown areas have been introduced overnight in Wales and Scotland, and experts are watching figures in Birmingham. Dozens of schools across the UK have been hit with coronavirus cases since pupils returned to class. Some schools have closed their doors just days after reopening while others have told whole classes and year groups to self-isolate for two weeks following confirmed cases of Covid-19. It came as Health Secretary Matt Hancock suggested young people under 25 - particularly those aged 17-21 - have helped propel the rise in positive coronavirus cases across the country in recent days The Health Secretary urged young people to act responsibly to avoid infecting older relatives, who may become more ill with the disease. He told BBC Radio 1's Newsbeat: "Don't kill your gran by catching coronavirus and then passing it on.”
