The origins of Todi, as often happens, are shrouded in legend and are lost in the mists of time. According to tradition, in fact, the city was founded in 2707 BC. from the Umbrian tribe of the Veii.
From a more strictly historical point of view, the first settlements on the hill date back to the VIII - VI century BC by groups of shepherds-farmers strongly influenced by the nearby Etruscan presence. According to most scholars, the very name of the city -Tular- derives precisely from the Etruscan language, from which the Latin “Tuder” , which means "border", testifying to the strategic position of the city perched at 400 meters on top of a hill to dominate a large portion of the Tiber valley. After the period of Etruscan domination, the phase to which the first city wall dates back, in the third century BC, Todi became Roman dominion, obtaining the title of "Municipium" in 89 BC, with the inscription to the Clustumina tribe. Subsequently, during the Augustan age, the center experienced an impetuous development that led to the creation of various public works, all over the amphitheater, the baths and the theater.
As for most of the Italian territory, with the collapse of the Western Roman Empire, Todi also began a phase of instability that led it to be occupied first by the Goths, then by the Byzantines and finally by the Lombards.
In medieval times, particularly from the 13th century, the city experienced its moment of maximum splendor with the expansion of the city walls and its sphere of influence to the entire surrounding area, in particular to the nearby Terni and Amelia who even became tributaries. Precisely in this era of great city development, in 1236, the city was the birthplace of Jacopo de Benedetti, better known as Jacopone da Todi, one of the most important figures of the Italian Middle Ages and author of some of the most famous Laudi in the “Vernacular”.
After a period of crisis which coincided with the domination of Charles IV (14th century), between the 16th and 17th centuries Todi experienced a new phase of urban and cultural growth thanks to the work of Bishop Angelo Cesi, with the creation of authentic masterpieces such as the Fontana della Rua, the church of the Crucifix and above all the Church of the Consolation, attributed to Bramante.
