In 1937 the swath of the globe from India to Japan contained half the world's population but only two nations with real sovereignty (Japan and Thailand) and two with compromised sovereignty (China and Mongolia). All other peoples in the region endured under some form of colonialism. Today the region contains nineteen fully sovereign nations. In today's show Richard B. Frank will give an overview of the early part of this terrible and underappreciated war. The theme of the show is to present the war in a global context including how the war influenced the Eastern Front and US policy.
Richard B. Frank is an American lawyer and military historian. Frank graduated from the University of Missouri in 1969, after which he served four years in the United States Army. During the Vietnam War, he served a tour of duty as a platoon leader in the 101st Airborne Division. In 1976, he graduated from Georgetown University Law Center. We are delighted to welcome Richard, a true superstar of military history to WW2TV. His Guadalcanal book is a bone fide classic of historical literature, as is Tower of Skulls, the first of a trilogy.
