Multiple individuals have been killed, wounded, or reported missing in three states as a result of a turf battle between the Hells Angels and a rival motorcycle gang that erupted outside a California Starbucks last year.

Last month's brawl and shooting between members of the Hells Angels and the Vagos motorcycle gangs in Nevada escalated the streak of violence, which law enforcement officials have called the worst clash between two California-based biker factions in over a decade.

Shootings occurred inside John Ascuaga's Nugget hotel and casino in Sparks, California, resulting in the killing of Jeffrey "Jethro" Pettigrew, 51, president of the Hells Angels chapter in San Jose, California, and the injury of one Vagos member. The following day, at the location of a nearby motorcycle gathering, a second Vagos member was shot and wounded in a drive-by shooting.

Eleven months after a battle between the two gangs in Arizona left five people wounded, the killing of Pettigrew is said to have inflamed tensions inside the Hells Angels ranks and led to another homicide in California. Graham Barlowe, resident agent in charge of the ATF's Sacramento branch, has remarked, "There have been concerns about this rivalry for some time."

The most recent victim of the Hells Angels' fight against Vagos was actually killed by one of their own. A close friend of Pettigrew's and the sergeant-at-arms of the San Jose chapter of the Hells Angels, 52-year-old Steven Tausan, was shot and killed by a fellow club member during Pettigrew's funeral in California weeks after his murder in Nevada. According to a law enforcement official briefed on the case, Tausan and the other witnesses confronted the suspected shooter, Steve Ruiz, after learning of his role in the fight inside the Nugget casino and their belief that Pettigrew had not been protected. Ruiz then allegedly pulled a revolver on Tausan.

San Jose police spokesperson Jose Garcia claimed that as thousands of mourners filed out of the cemetery, a group of motorcycles swooped in and attacked Ruiz, preventing police officers from effecting an arrest. Garcia added that witnesses saw Ruiz get bundled into a car and driven away, but it was unclear whether the bikers had pounced on him to beat him or help him escape.
