The reported suicide of a 21-year-old Muslim male in police custody in Uttar Pradesh's Kasganj on Monday, November 8, has sparked various concerns. While the police maintain that the kid, Altaf, hanged himself while in jail, his family believes the cops were involved.
Altaf's mother claims that her son, who was detained on suspicion of kidnapping a female, was killed. Meanwhile, Altaf's father, Chand Mian, first claimed that his son was murdered while in police custody. However, he quickly changed his account and gave the police a clean chit. Altaf's mother, Fatima, has claimed that her husband's testimony was delivered under pressure.
The event was described by Superintendent of Police Rohan Botre. "The personnel present unlocked (the toilet door), freed him and promptly took him to the hospital, where he died after some time of treatment. Five officers have been suspended for what seems to be gross carelessness throughout the inquiry "SP Botre added.
