Usedom is a country town on the island of the same name in Usedom in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (Germany). It belongs to the Vorpommern-Greifswald district and is the administrative seat of the Usedom-Süd office, which includes a further 14 municipalities. To linguistically differentiate it from the island of Usedom, it is also called the city of Usedom or Usedom-Stadt.
The country town is located in the southwestern part of the island of the same name, in the so-called Achterland, on the northwestern shore of Lake Usedom, a bay of the Szczecin Lagoon. In the west and north, the area of the city is bordered by the Peenestrom.
The city of Usedom has so far not fulfilled a center function according to the criteria, the closest basic center determined in the spatial planning is the northeastern Heringsdorf, the next center is the southwestern Hanseatic city of Anklam.
After the administrative reform in 1815 Usedom came to the Prussian province of Pomerania and belonged to the district of Usedom-Wollin from 1818 to 1945. From 1945 to 1952, the city, together with the part of the district of Usedom-Wollin remaining with Germany after the Second World War, formed the district of Usedom in the state of Mecklenburg. This was absorbed in 1952 in the Wolgast district in the Rostock district. The municipality has been part of the State of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania since 1990. Usedom has been part of the Eastern Pomerania District since 1994, which merged with the Vorpommern-Greifswald District in 2011.
