Israeli Minister Proposes Building a Synagogue At Al-Aqsa Compound
Far-right Israeli Minister Itamar Ben Gvir sparked outrage by stating he would build a synagogue at Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa mosque compound, defying government policy. Al-Aqsa is Islam's third holiest site and a key symbol of Palestinian identity, but also Judaism’s holiest place, where the Second Temple once stood. Ben Gvir told Army Radio that if it were up to him, he would also place an Israeli flag at the site. Under the current status quo, non-Muslims can visit but are prohibited from praying or displaying religious symbols. Ben Gvir and other hardline nationalists have increasingly defied these restrictions, leading to tensions with Palestinians.
