You may be wondering why this video is not Mariah Carey, so I'll explain. Hers is, of course, a beautiful version, but this song goes far deeper than whatever emotion her voice and life can bring to it.
This song was not written, as many people think, by Harry Nilsson in the 70s. It was written a few years before, by two men called Peter Ham and Tom Evans. Their band, Badfinger, were likened to and championed by the Beatles, and Macca himself called this song 'The killer song of all time'.
Now this composition was made famous by Nilsson, and then more famous still by Carey, and perhaps this may be tragedy enough for two unsung songwriters. But here's the killer punch: both Pete and Tom committed suicide within 8 years of each other.
Whether it was down to the cruel music industry or events in their personal lives, the words to this beautiful song take on a more profound relevance when you take these two lads, the song's writers, into account. So that, in short, is why you see their performance instead of Mariah Carey's. Sorry Mariah. x.
