One question we often get is, "Do I need to buy an urn from the funeral home?"
The answer is a resounding No. You can buy an urn anywhere, from anyone you like. You can even make your own, and the funeral home is required by law to accept it.
According to the Federal Trade Commission, "The funeral provider cannot refuse to handle a casket or urn you bought online, at a local casket store, or somewhere else — or charge you a fee to do it."
If the urn is going to be buried in a cemetery, you may be required to get an outer burial container or vault that prevents the ground from caving in. In this case as well, you are not required to buy from them, you can bring your own as long as it meets their requirements.
