Kidney disease is very common in dogs, and protecting your pet from kidney disease means being vigilant from the beginning, and making sure your dog is healthy. Studies show that 1 in 10 dogs will get chronic kidney disease.

Dogs can get kidney disease for any number of underlying reasons, and to make matters worse, it’s often difficult to spot. Some of the first indications of kidney disease in dogs may include subtle weight loss, urinating/peeing more often and drinking a lot more water. Because of this, if you notice your dog is peeing on the floor or asking to go out more, or if your dog is always drinking water, it may be time to get it checked out for chronic kidney disease. This condition can go undetected until the dog's organs are functioning at approximately 33% to 25% of their capacity. At this point it is already very late in the progression of kidney disease.

One of the most important treatment goals for dogs with kidney disease and best way to go about handling their situation include providing adequate and appropriate nutrition with a kidney friendly diet. One important change to make in a dog's diet with kidney disease is to reduce the amount of protein they consume. Decreased dietary protein appears to slow the progression of chronic kidney disease by decreasing the workload on the kidneys to excrete protein waste products. The recommended range of protein on a dry matter basis for dogs with CKD is less than or equal to 14-20%.
