Hanle is a small village located in Ladakh. It is situated at an altitude of around 14,800 feet above sea level. The village is known for its stunning natural beauty, clear skies, and its significance as a site for astronomical observations.
In this video you see our road journey from Hanle to Umling la. Umling la is about 75 km away from Hanle and 255 km away from Leh.
Date of video shoot: 23rd July 2023.
Below are the activities / key destinations we visited during the journey.
We started our day from our Guest house, we had our breakfast, which was the traditional ladakhi food - Paba which is made of Barley flour, along with Aloo paratha with curd, then we went to scout the guest house, because, the rooms for the other was not available. Hanle does n’t have many options for accommodations so it is advisable to book your accommodation in advance.
Hanle Observatory - also known as the Indian Astronomical Observatory (IAO), is one of the major attractions in the area. It is operated by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics and houses some of the world's highest-altitude telescopes. Due to its high altitude and clear skies, Hanle offers excellent conditions for astronomical observations, making it an important location for astrophysical research.
Then we proceeded towards Umling la. The road to Umling la had various scenic views which is not at all common. Barren lands, we did not come across any vehicle or any person or any animal enroute to umling la.
Chisumle - We stop by one and only Breakfast, Lunch. The distance from umling la & chisumle is about 25 km. We had Rajma Chawal for lunch - Rs 150.
Umling La - Umling La Pass, is one of the highest motorable passes in the world. It sits at an elevation of approximately 5,883 meters (19,024 feet) above sea level. Road to Umling la is adventurous, the mobile signals are not there, in the entire route from Hanle to Umling la we were struggling with a proper network. It also holds Guiness book world record.
Then we returned back to Hanle, we stayed at Milkyway Homestay, per night Rs 2800 for double occupancy with Breakfast & Dinner, the most important electricity is a challenge in Hanle.
Electricity is only available from 6pm to 11pm post 11pm there is no electricity. There are few Guest houses in Hanle which provide the power backup post 11 pm, Milkyway homestay & Hanle House.
One of the reasons is that it is near the Observatory, to avoid light pollution.
Hanle is also popular for the prime location for the Stargazing in Ladakh apart from Nubra valley. After dinner we also saw the stars we tried to capture in our camera.
