This very short poem by Lang Leav is profoundly moving and poignant. It is so very hard for people to talk about their mental fragilities. As a society, we still do not have empathy enough to interpret the terrible torment that underlies seemingly innocuous statements. Everybody mechanically and ritualistically says 'I'm Fine' but are they really? We don't listen closely enough to know what pain lurks behind smiling faces and laughter. These lines are a warning for us all. Maybe we could prevent tragedies simply by listening to the unarticulated cry for help. The moot point is, do we care enough? Far too often we recognise clues in hindsight, in the aftermath of a terrible event. The poem is a wake up call that we all need. It also tells those who suffer from mental anguish that someone in the world feels for them. Each individual's battle with mental health is unique and we would be better off as a society to pay attention to the subtle, near-invisible signs that we rarely care to bother with. Lang Leav leaves us with a lesson that we need to remember. We may scoff at these poems and deride such writing or assign derogatory labels such as 'instapoetry' but we do that in part because we do not want to stare at the torture, torment and loneliness behind the spoken word. Perhaps, it frightens us. Sadly, depression is real and not something that we can simply wish away.
Full poem:
The girl who smiles all the time
is the one who’s never fine
The boy who surrounds
himself with friends
wishes that his life would end.
For those who say they never knew—
the saddest leave the least of clues.
