Alcatel-Lucent and Bell Labs CTO Marcus Weldon talks to John Kennedy about the promise of 5G and how Ireland’s broadband strategy to connect every town and village with fibre is the right idea.
Fifth generation (5G) mobile will be the wireless standard that will connect every device that will comprise the internet of things, where every device from smartphones to sensors will connect in real-time and at high speed.
At the heart of this is not only fast broadband speeds but resilience and the ability to ensure that no matter what device is being used quality and consistency matter.
At the heart of Alcatel-Lucent’s 4G and 5G vision are small cell networks that will ensure fibre-like speeds, even in highly congested areas.
As Weldon points out, the key hurdle here is physics and actual current limits on broadband and wireless spectrum.
