The Celtic language family is a branch of the larger Indo-European language family, and it includes languages spoken primarily in the British Isles and Brittany in France. The Celtic languages are traditionally classified into two main groups: Goidelic (or Gaelic) and Brythonic (or Brittonic).
Goidelic languages include:
Irish Gaelic (spoken in Ireland)
Scottish Gaelic (spoken in Scotland)
Manx (spoken on the Isle of Man)
Brythonic languages include:
Welsh (spoken in Wales)
Breton (spoken in Brittany, France)
Cornish (spoken in Cornwall, England)
Mutual intelligibility within the Celtic language family varies depending on the specific languages in question. Generally, languages within the same group (Goidelic or Brythonic) have a higher degree of mutual intelligibility than those from different groups.
We created those mini language challenges so you can experience those languages yourself and tell us how well can you understand each language based on your linguistic background. Do let us know in the comments about your experience.
🤗 Big thanks to Ellis from Wales! 🏴
