China invited Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for an official visit to Beijing this month. Netanyahu’s office made the announcement on 27 June during a meeting with visiting members of the US Congress and not during a routine schedule announcement. However, the PM’s office did not disclose whether or when the trip would take place and China too hasn’t publicly announced the trip yet. Beijing’s “invitation” comes a few days after Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas visited the country. Netanyahu is yet to receive an official invitation for a visit to Washington since he took office amid increasingly strained US-Israel ties. Is the Israeli PM playing the China card to send a message to US President Joe Biden? Is Netanyahu weighing his options? How could it backfire on Tel Aviv? Watch for details.
